That Time We Overdosed On Chocolate

My sister will probably kill me for sharing this family secret. But it’s Eater Easter and I find myself wooed by the spirit of Mark in the movie Love Actually. Honestly – who can forget his infamous:

“But for now, let me say – Without hope or agenda – Just because it’s Christmas – And at Christmas you tell the truth …”

I’m sorry Sis,  but at Easter you tell the truth so I’m spilling the beans on that time we overdosed on chocolate.

That Time We Overdosed On Chocolate

This delight took place waay, waay back. Even before my sister’s twins were born. With her husband out for the evening at a work function, she asked me to join her for a night of tv and company. It must have been a good 20 minutes or so before she divulged a glorious tidbit.

“We’ve got a box of Rogers’ Chocolates in the fridge.”

Excuse me?

For the initiated: Behold the wonder that is a Rogers’ Chocolate.

Back then one could only acquire them in the city of their birth. Victoria, British Columbia. You brought them home as a souvenir. Of course, there was that one gift shop in our city of Vancouver that carried them but that was for visiting gentlemen needing a last minute gift to take home to the wives. Locals only bought them in Victoria.

These puppies are huge. Both in flavour and in size. Certain silly sensible relatives acquaintances have been known to carve them into quarters to be shared. Yes, they are that big.

Turns out, the gems in the fridge were supposed to be for my sister’s husband’s secretary.

This particular box was just like the one above, comprised of ten different flavours. Peppermint … Caramel Cream … Maraschino Cherry and my particular favourite – Maple…

Of course, I had to hold one. She’d never know. Each chocolate is individually wrapped in the evocatively thick, pink and white paper.

My soul melted as I felt the familiar weight in my hand.

“Ok if I smell it? I can unwrap it carefully. Promise.”

I gingerly grasped the paper and ever so carefully unwrapped it. My sister did the same.

Our brains were infused with the heavenly aroma of cocoa, thick cream and memories. Wonderful memories. How the sturdy chocolate snapped as your teeth sink in, how the creamy interior oozed out over your tongue … Our salivary glands began pumping in earnest.

“You know what Kel? If we each ate one we could bundle the other eight up in a pretty bag. She’d never know that she was supposed to get 10…”

Of course you can guess the rest. We … Ate … All … Ten … Of … Them. But not until I swore on all things chocolate that I’d zip down the very next morning and purchase a duplicate box from that one local store that sold them. The gift shop in the luxurious Hotel Vancouver.

You’ll be happy to know that I was true to my word and waddled in the very next morning at dawn to pick up the replacement. No one, other than Sis and me and our waistlines were any the wiser. Until now.

This has been a Finish the Sentence Friday post. This week’s sentence is “Marty McFly and Doc Brown’s DeLorean are giving me a ride and we’re traveling to the date…” This week’s hosts are as usual, Kristi from http://www.findingninee.com and this week’s sentence thinker-upper Michelle Grewe of http://crumpetsandbollocks.com/.

Enough about me and Sis and that time we overdosed on chocolate. I’m curious about you. Have you ever sunk your teeth into a Rogers’? Are you like my mom and once chowed down on a two-pound bunny in one sitting (yes we come by it honestly in my family) or are you not so fond of chocolate? What’s one family secret that you’ve never told anyone? If you’d care to share, I’d love to hear.

Happily today, you can order Rogers’ Chocolates online. Check them out here. And no – I’m not getting a dime for spreading the word about them. Just potential grief from Sis.

If you’re in need of a laugh check out my previous post about the time our cherished golden retriever gobbled up the Easter eggs, foil and all or the delightful time a rat decapitated my Easter treat. All true. All Just TypiKel.

I’d be thrilled beyond measure if you’d share this or any of my Just TypiKel posts. Every little share is good for my health. In more ways than one. Thank you.

  1. Raspberry! I have to admit I have eaten three at one sitting. No wonder I run. We have just moved to Victoria……..oh oh?

    1. Oh how this comment warms my heart, Lorraine. Thank you. Three in one sitting is admirable. And yes, run worthy. Happy Easter! Did the Easter Bunny leave some Rogers’, I wonder?

  2. I adore Rogers chocolates. I’m in awe that you were able to down five Victoria Creams each in one sitting – you gals don’t mess around! Very impressive 😉

    1. My mother still groans, I mean crows, about the time she managed to consume a 2 lb Purdy’s solid chocolate bunny in one go. Happily she and my sister and I have managed to tamper down our chocolate cravings to more modest consumption since those glory days … A very Happy Easter to you and yours, Jean.

  3. That was hilarious ! I can well imagine how easy that was to do, although, as much as I REALLY love chocolate, I am not a fan of the Rogers chocolates. However, my husband and I once got in serious trouble from our 8 year old daughter when we were having a chocolate craving one night and the only thing in the house were her left over Easter chocolates. It was quite a while after Easter, so we didn’t think she would notice, but of course she did, and was very annoyed and left a huge note on the remainder saying Mum and Dad KEEP OUT ! Busted !!

    1. Oh, Jane that’s hilarious. And cringe worthy. I can imagine your guilty faces upon discovery. So there is one thing that is different about us, ‘eh? You’re not fond of Rogers’. Interesting. Do you like Purdy’s? If so, should we ever go on a Victoria field trip, you get them and I’ll go for the Rogers’. Happy Easter!

  4. OMG I remember my brother selling some chocolate bars to raise money for his baseball team and we ATE THEM ALL, and couldn’t replace them!! And now I must must must must taste that chocolate you talk about because I’ve never heard of it. But maple??? OMG.

    1. Oh how very funny, Kristi. You ATE THEM ALL? And they couldn’t be replaced? For some reason, you’ve reminded me of the time my sister had to store all of the Girl Guide cookie boxes for her daughters’ group. She stored them in the garage and they absorbed the gas scent. Each and every box. Dreadfully unfortunate.
      And yes. MAPLE.

  5. No worries. I’m amazed that you have such a good memory. I remember devouring a box of Roger’s chocolates with you… Just do not remember the details. Clearly, it all worked out. Yikes! We do like our sweets.

    1. We do like our sweets, indeed. Glad I could fill in the blanks on that wondrous evening, Sis. Oh man, I remember feeling rather ill afterwards. But it was SO worth it. Thanks for understanding the “need” to put this story out into the world. Wasn’t it a blessing that the Hotel Van sold them. I think that’s the only reason we gave ourselves permission to consume them all …

    1. Yes, I’d say the likelihood of holding, unwrapping, inhaling and then rewrapping is pretty darn slim …

  6. My mouth is watering and I’m dreaming of a trip to BC. When I come visit, promise we will swing by the Hotel Vancouver for a little shopping? You know how much I love hotel gift shops…

    1. Oh Mo – there’s now a Rogers’ Chocolates shop in Vancouver. Yes, indeed we shall pop in for a visit. Mind you, I do know how much you love hotel gift shops so we’ll swing by the Hotel Vancouver too …

  7. When I was pregnant I couldn’t eat anything. Anything except scones, muffins, cupcakes and… wait for it, Good and Plenty. (Which in case you don’t get them, are licorice capsules covered in pink and white sugar.) I ate a 10 lb. bag in three days. That’s a fact. And in case you can’t do the lb./kg translation, it was approximately 9% of my bodyweight. And as a fun fact, I ended up needing two root canals, three caps and a dental implant within two years. Coincidence? I think not.
Holy cow, those Rogers things look amazing.

    1. No we don’t have Good and Plenty. Wait. I think we call them Goodies. Tubular in shape? Yes! You ate a 10 lb bag of them? Oh now that’s stellar. Such an achievement. Your dentist must have had a field day with you. Does he/she wish you’d get pregnant again?

  8. Ahhh…Roger’s Chocolates. My favorite is maple as well. I haven’t had one in years, but now I’ll probably go online and order some! In the 80’s my aunt was the secretary for the president of Ghirardelli chocolate in San Francisco. She used to send us 10 pound chocolate bars – and I may have been able to eat the whole thing in a weekend!

    1. We absolutely adore Ghirardelli chocolate, Lana. Used to stay down by the factory in SF when we visited and we’d come home with buckets of them.London Drugs sells them up here but they don’t carry 10 lb bars. My two will be so jealous when they hear you’d get sent to you on a regular basis. Golly. That’s incredible.

  9. I don’t blame you one bit. I only wish that I was there with you and sis so that I could help dispose of the evidence. My mouth is watering as I leave you. Have a good week and for gosh sakes stay away from the chocolates…

  10. I’ve never had Roger’s chocolate, but we have a local place called Holl’s Chocolate, and their chocolate covered strawberries are huge, and they put a white sugary layer between the strawberry and chocolate making it a total secret recipe you can’t make on your own. Then they have truffles. My favorite, Irish Cream and Gran Marnier. Every time you go into the store, they let you have a free sample of chocolate. I love that place. I just can’t always afford it LOL. Chocolate. Good memories. I love being a woman.

    1. What? This Holl’s sounds absolutely incredible. AND they let you have a free sample on every visit? I’m off to google them.

  11. I am now dying for some Rogers chocolates. Love “the familiar weight in my hand.” Aah, this makes me think of my aunt bringing See’s Candies home each Christmas, and how we’d all divvy up and then hide our shares because it was such a rare and delicious treat.

  12. So, I thought I left a comment here last week … but now I remember that before I hit send, I was suddenly overcome by a craving and had to leave the keyboard to root through the pantry for some chocolate. Too bad there was nothing in there as delectable as Rogers chocolates. Settling for a handful of chocolate chips is just not the same! I’m glad you were able to replace the box – no harm done, right?! Yum!

    1. That’s funny, Susan. Oh those chocolate chips. I keep mine in the freezer. OF course, I buy the jumbo Costco version and I rarely bake with them now that my two are away. Funny how the contents diminish though …

  13. Another hilarious story, Kelly! I just pictured you and your sister with chocolate smeared fingers and lips… eyeing the box for *just one more*.

I could easily see ME in that scene as well. *BEEN THERE* Except it’s been taking and eatig ALL of my kids’ Halloween candy, Easter candy or Christmas candy. Shame on me.

    1. Oh the tempting Halloween, Easter and Christmas candy. YES! I do miss it. You’ve reminded me of the countless times our late and much loved golden retriever Oscar chowed down on all of the sugary treats in our house. He’d gobble them up – foil wrap and all. Even consumed an entire box of Costco sized Splenda packets. Can’t help but think that’s what sent him to Heaven at the young age of 9 …
