It’s a day for firsts. My very first podcast. Also, Jennifer Scharf’s very first podcast on Inside Voice where she hosts writers from around the web, reading their words to the world.
I chose to read a piece that first found its home here on Just TypiKel. Longtime readers might remember it as “I Thought I Was Going To Die.” I tweaked it a bit, tightening it up so that it was shorter and then renamed it the more appropriate “Care For A Top Up?”
Please have a listen. I hope you enjoy it and that it’ll leave you with a better sense of who I am and the reason I write.
My Podcast on Inside Voice
And there you have it. I do hope you enjoyed that Just TypiKel snippet from my life. I’m delighted to say that Jennifer is planning new episodes with different writers every Thursday! Please subscribe to Inside Voice on iTunes. You can also follow Inside Voice on Twitter and Facebook.

OH my gosh that was HILARIOUS!!! I loved that story and you reading it just made it THAT much more funny to hear it all play out with your great story telling voice. Oh Kelly- I would have been mortified!! Why on earth did that teacher just pick YOU to read about? What about the other kid’s posters? I would have been sweating through that entire meeting. Oh that is just classic!!
And to think you are going to be in Dayton Ohio. Oh, how I wish I was going to the Erma workshop, just so I could meet you in person!
I loved listening to this podcast. Your just as brilliant speaking as you are writing. I’m so glad you shared this with us!
Thank you so much for listening, Chris. I do appreciate it. As I remember, the other kids’ posters were less innocuous. Shades of Daddy drinking beer for breakfast and Mommy falling asleep at dinner kind of thing. I suspect she felt I’d respond in a better way, perhaps?
I do wish you’d signed up for the Erma workshop, too. I’d LOVE to meet you!
I had read this story on your blog – but loved hearing you read it!! Well done, Kelly! By the way, I finally remembered to look for your youtube video from Listen to your Mother. I absolutely loved it – and left a comment there.
Oh thank you, Susan. That’s very kind. We had a bit of a problem on the day of LTYM. The audio guy was double booked so happily a dad (also a audio guy) subbed in at the very last minute.
OMG you are so so so awesome. I LOVE hearing your voice again!!! My dad was born in Dayton OH.
LOL to Not So Typikal 😉
YAY to your book!!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your story!!! The wine glass resembling carnage??? LOLOLOL!!!! Mom’s suck when it comes to movies. Going again to find your video on LTYM. I’m going to listen to mine again too because how cool is LTYM 😉
Thanks so very much for your kind words, Kristi. Means the world to me, truly. Our LTYM production ran into a snag when the audio guy cancelled at the last minute due to being double booked. Luckily a husband was able to do a quick audio/visual set up and we have a taping. And yes, Moms do suck when it comes to movies… Ha!
That was awesome Kelly! LOVED the idea of a podcast and you reading your story. I’ve always enjoyed audio so much more than silently reading to the voices in my head. I especially like it when the author themselves is doing the reading….it really brings the story alive.
As for your Canadian accent. I didn’t notice it one bit. 🙂
Well that’s good ‘eh that you didn’t notice the Canadian accent. Ha! Thank you so much for listening, Michelle. I really do appreciate it.
That was fabulous, Kelly! You have such a smooth and pleasing voice, full of life! There’s something about video and audio that makes one feel so much more connected! Live! 🙂 Thank you for the lovely listen! I hope you’ll do more audio and video!
Thank you so very much, Vidya. It was a lot of fun to do and the time flew by. I do thank you for sharing it, too. She’s asked me to do another one in the future so hopefully that’ll come to pass.
How exciting and wonderful to hear your sweet voice….telling yet another fabulous story about how it all went wrong. HA! Sounds like you will be doing more of these little podcast for us in the future too. Congratulations and well done, my dear….well done!
Thank you so much for both listening and for your kind words, Debbie. It was rather fun to do.
How exciting for you!
Thanks, Kathy. I do appreciate you listening and for leaving a comment. I had a lot of fun doing it.
This is fabulous! I love hearing your voice! I think I remember this story… am I insane? It’s hilarious. Well done, you! Congratulations!
Sorry…lots of exclamation points. 😀
Nope – not insane in the slightest, Lisa. I wrote this first as a FTSF post and then tweaked it (made it shorter) for the podcast. You have a great memory. And yes, I love exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!
Kelly… love this! I have a BA in Theater too! Maybe we could put on a show for the conference attendees!! Love your story! Great post!!!!
What? Oh the show we could put on! How fun. And am I right in thinking that you are also closer to 5 feet than 6? Golly. We could be twins.
Great podcast Kelly – you are a real natural! I liked being able to listen and find out more about you and your writing life.
Thank you, Emily. It was fun to do. I do appreciate you taking the time to not only listen but to leave a comment. Have a wonderful week.
Oh, I loved hearing your voice, Kelly! I’m jealous that you are going to a few blogging conferences…I need to do that again. I’ll be waiting to hear your thoughts on Erma Bombeck.
Congrats on the book – just typikel that you wrote for a cat anthology without ever having a cat!
Thanks, Dana. And yes, Just TypiKel. I do like cats however I’ve never had one. My boss did though, and it is that one that I’m writing about …
You did such a great job! I really enjoyed listening to you read this story – and yes on the Canadian accent – it’s the “about’s” that give you away :)! Can’t wait to hear about your Erma Bombeck conference – I’d love to go to that one someday.
Thank you for listening, Lana. Now what’s with my “about?” I think I say it the same way you do, well at least the same way your fellow Washingtonians do. “About.” Like that. Not “Aboot” I’ll have to go back and have a listen 🙂
She is correct – it was delightful. You are a natural here – great voice! Congratulations on the book – how exciting. It reminded me when my niece at 6 wrote down her dad, a computer programmer was 50 something (he was 30 at the time) and lived inside a computer. Keep going to the conferences and getting these great stories out there!
Oh man that’s funny! He’s 50 and he lives in a computer? Classic. Thank you for listening, Vickie. I really do appreciate it. I’ll keep trying to get to the conferences. Looking forward to my first one.
“I began to relax. Silly me.” I laughed out loud at that. This is fabulous! I haven’t been here for awhile and glad I returned listened to this. I’m making my rounds to blogs I’ve enjoyed in the past but have neglected for far too long!
Julie! Thank you for popping in and having a listen. I know just what you mean about being neglectful. I’ve been away from yours for too long. Off to visit you now.
Great story and great job done by you. A story just comes alive when the author reads it.
Thank you so much, Debbie. I really appreciate the fact that you made the time to listen to it.
Kelly, you ROCK!!!! I love that post when I read it but loved it even more hearing it in your voice. Can not wait to meet you in person in SLC. I will be happy to videotape the show that you and our pal Katie Clooney put on for the attendees. Congratulations on all of your very well deserved success, my friend!
Hahahaha! Grinning over your offer to videotape the McKenzie/Clooney show. Too funny. Thank you for your kind words and for listening to the podcast. It was a hoot to do.
It was so nice to hear your lovely voice and learn about your very interesting life experiences. Congratulations on all of the great things coming your way soon!!! How exciting for you. I will be able to say, “I knew her when….” 🙂
