If the past week, no, day, no, hour has taught me anything, it’s that timing is everything, especially now.
My pal and I visited Iceland a year and a half ago. You can read about it in my “Top Five Reasons To Visit Iceland post. Our trip was so successful that we booked another in 2020 to Costa Rica. Yes timing is everything, especially now. You see, we could have gone in March but at the last minute we chose mid-February.
Today, I’m sharing the things that most surprised me about Costa Rica. Because, once we emerge from whatever-this-horrid-nightmare is, everyone’ll be looking for new adventures.
Of course, we will.
How They Dry Those Costa Rican Coffee Beans
Can you say, “low tech?” The beans are … simply spread out on the cement outside.
Every Zoo But One Has Been Turned Into A Rescue Center
And that last remaining zoo is about to transition into a rescue center soon. Cool, huh? We visited the Zooave Rescue Centre in La Garita de Alajuela in the Central Valley of the country. This was one of our escorts.
Here we learned the heartwarming story of the toucan named Grecia. When his beak was badly damaged (rumored to be at the hands of some youthful louts) he was taken immediately to the rescue center. The beak unfortunately couldn’t be saved and doctors from both Canada and the US were recruited to come up with an alternative. They created a removable (to ensure regular cleaning) prosthetic one made of nylon. Some four years later, Grecia has never looked back. He’s thriving.
Why is his prosthetic white? To remind us of why it’s needed and to hopefully ensure that no other toucan will ever need a prosthetic beak, ever again.
The Wonder That Is Rainbow Eucalyptus Bark
I mean, really? Look at that bark. Surely it’s a magical mural? Nope. It’s nature showing off her finest. Anybody care to guess the name of that orange floral beauty? I’ve looked online and can’t find it. Just TypiKel.
I’ll sign off now with the promise to share more Costa Rican wonders soon.
But first, thanks to everyone who’s asked about Francine, my 97 year-old mom. She’s in quarantine. Her assisted living facility isn’t allowing anyone to visit the residents except in a medical emergency. So, we chat by phone. At least twice a day. Today she reminded us of the last time she found herself in quarantine. It was when her younger brother got polio …
Her advice about how to cope now? To always remember that “this too, shall pass, Kel. This, too, shall pass.”
Ok. Signing off with this lovely Guanacaste sunset. And to think they didn’t even know about the impending six-foot social distancing concept …
Timing Is Everything, Especially Now
How are you currently enduring this bizarre, new world of COVID-19? Please share. I’d love to hear.
Sending love and wishes for good health, and the assurance that yes, we are all in this together.
In the meantime, as they say in Costa Rica, “Pura Vida.”

Yes, we are indeed all in this together ! Thanks for that reminder Kelly. Love the pictures, that rainbow bark is amazing . As Ellen would say, be kind to one another !!
Yes, so very true, Jane. It’s a little challenging on the home front … Ha! Thank goodness the weather is holding and we have more than one room in our house … Stay well, my friend. Our pottery is waiting for us.
Great travel pics! Thanks for sharing your trip.
Thanks, Lynn. I close my eyes and I’m right back at Guanacaste beach … or try to be, at least.
Hi Kelly!
I’m so glad you got your trip in, and that you are sharing these awesome photos. The tree bark?! Wow.
I’m trying to convince my husband we should take the kids to CR summer 2021 when my son graduates from high school. A go big or go home type of trip. He seems unconvinced but I’ll show your pics to sway him.
Thanks for the update on Francine. Hugs to you all in this strange new world.
Katy – it is a magical, magical place. There’s nothing like waking up, slipping outside with your coffee and soaking up the sounds of the howler monkeys and chirping birds. I loved it and would return in a shot. Should you manage to get him onside, I’d be happy to share the must-do’s. Sending you all a jumbo hug as well. I’m grateful we can “chat” this way. Can’t imagine what it would be like otherwise.
That rainbow eucalyptus is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing all of this. And I’m glad to know about your mom. Definitely challenging times but her wisdom – as always – is spot on. Love and wellness to all. xo
Thank you, Lisa. Love and wellness to you, too. I am so grateful that we can all “chat” this way. Break out those puzzles!
Love your story — especially the last photo. I have been to that place and the memories of it 10+ years later still warm my soul.
I totally understand why. It’s a magical, magical place.
Pura Vida
Si, es muy importante, mi hermana.
What a grand escape this was!
It surely was, Carol. I cannot believe how much the world has changed since so few short weeks ago. My heart goes out to our tour guide who won’t be making her next trip. It was in May. Ugh.
