Psssst. We’ve got big family news. He’s almost 21 and she’s nearly 94. On the same day! Yes, two of my favourite people – my son and my mom – share the same birthday. And we are just days away from the big day.
Celebrations, at least on Francine’s part, have been full on. I’ve attended three parties in her honour and we’ve yet to have the family party.
She was bequeathed this gem to wear during one luncheon. The age of its owner? 90. Apparently he and his wife have a closet full of hats.
As for my son, he’ll be celebrating across the country at university. Naturally, I’ll get an edited version of his wild never-ending celebrations party.
How did this wonder of a shared birthday come about? Was it sheer luck or something more? Well, I like to think a lawnmower and my late husband are to blame for this superlative feat.
Family News. He’s Almost 21 and She’s Nearly 94
A lawnmower and my late husband? Yup. Three weeks prior to my due date of our second child, darling hubby announced breezily that he’d mow the lawn when he got home from work. Excuse me? Mowing the lawn was my department. I always mowed it. Did the man suddenly think I was an invalid just because I was the size of a house? Silly fool.
Of course, I got out the push mower and shoved it around both the front and back lawns later than morning. Easy peasy. All was well until later that night when I went into labour. Whoopsies. I’ll fast forward through all the birthing details to the moment when my mom was phoned on her birthday and learned she was about to get the best birthday gift of all: Another grandchild!
Frankly, I can’t believe this mischievous lad is about to turn 21.
Surely it was just yesterday that he shared certain family secrets at preschool and just a few months ago, when in response to my “Who made you SO cute?” he replied “Daddy and Sherman.”
No, Sherman was not “Mommy’s Special Friend.” He was the lovely neighbours’ pup.
So what is it that they most share in common? I’m thinking Birthday Boy got Sherman’s teeth … Or maybe the ears. You?
Soon To Be 21 uttered this at about the same age as Mom’s great-grandchild is now.
2 1/2.
Here we have the birthday girl sharing her love of painting with that great-grandchild.
So do the birthday kids share some common quirks other than both adoring me ?
You bet. Both are voracious readers, possess a wicked sense of humour, are gifted with the ability to write and perhaps most telling of all, both have a penchant for colourful shoes.
Bonus points for those of you who can tell me which picture is attributed to my son and which to my mom.
Before I give your eyes a rest, I invite you to enjoy a floral bouquet in honour of these two special people.
Stunningly beautiful, no? And, I’m pleased to report, beyond delicious. Yes! They are a cupcake wonder that a pal brought to the recent neighbourhood dog walkers’ birthday party. Several of the lovely members of that group are readers of Just TypiKel, and bless them, asked to meet Francine! She was delighted to attend and enjoyed her own floral cupcake.
Enough about the family news. He’s almost 21 and she’s nearly 94. I’m curious about you. Do you have family members or pals or even nemeses that share the same birthday? If you’d care to share, I’d love to hear.
And by the by … you’ll find my previous birthday post of his 18th and her 91st here.
The happiest of birthdays to you, H and you, Francine. May you have many, many more. Love you both to the moon and back.

Happy Birthday to both of them! In my family there’s a big clump of birthdays in June and July, and four of my five nieces/nephews (from the same family) have birthdays within a month of each other. No duplicate dates, though.
Thank you, Kathy. I’ll pass on your kind birthday wishes to them both. Wow that’s a heck of a lot of birthday gifts and parties to deal with. Do you have to do it individually or are they lumped together?
It’s getting harder to celebrate now that people live all over the country. At my house we lump Father’s Day in with everything else and have a “bash”. I used to try and send the nieces and nephew birthday cards, but they tend to move and now share their address, so they have to settle for something on Facebook.
Such a great idea to do that on Father’s Day, Kathy. And, aren’t we blessed in that respect to have Facebook? sometimes it’s a curse, but not in the birthday department.
Getting this post today, 9/21 by clicking over from the other one. Whatev. The mysteries of technology are just that to me: mysteries!
Happy birthday to everyone in your family.
Now, my daughter and I are 1 day apart. I like to joke that she didn’t want to share her birthday with me so she arrived a mere hour before she would have had to share with me. Smart girl going first, too. She gets the nice half of the birthday cake, I get the half-eaten half the next day.
Thanks, Katy. So relieved the techy issue resolved itself. It’s a mysterious minefield for me …
Thank you also for your kind birthday wishes which I’ll pass on to the birthday kids.
I didn’t realize that you and your girl are one day apart. Wow. And isn’t she the clever clogs to arrange for her to be the first one? Love the concept of one cake. I wonder if I can mail Mom’s leftovers to my lad …
Happy Birthday, Francine & H! My cousin and I share the same birthday; she’s two years older than I am. Our dad’s were twins.
Thank you, Iva. I’ll let Francine and H know that you’re wishing them Birthday greetings! That’s really quite something about you and your cousin being the daughters of twins and having the same birthday. Whoa. Now there’s a story.
Great work Kel! Got your email. Look forward to seeing you Sat for the party!
Hooray! Glad you got the email and I do thank you for letting me know, Lynn. See you Sat!
Happiest of birthdays to H and Francine! And happy “technology worked this time” day to you! What a lucky gal you are to have such a vibrant and inspiring role model in your mom. I’m so glad that you share her story with all of us as a reminder of what is possible with the right attitude and the right pair of shoes!
Awwwh I hope they both have FABULOUS birthdays. And the shoes….OYYY! Get your mom some Irregular Choice ones. And maybe your son! I reckon they’d love them!
The cupcakes look AMAZING! 😀
I think that is so special that your Mum and your son share their special day, especially as they also share so many wonderful personality traits ! My very best wishes to them both ! LOVE your Mum’s painting, and those cupcakes are amazing !!
What beautiful cupcakes. I had to scan back to take another look. Never figured the image as I glanced at first included something edible. Being a visual one with food treats, this is something I would have relished. Hope you were able to do so with both sight and taste, Kelly. Close birthdays are an issue with my family too. All but me (mother, father, sisters) were born within one month and one day of each other. Guess it’s no wonder I’m a bit of the odd one out in the family (couldn’t resist throwing an idiom at you :-)).
Double the pleasure, double the fun – happy birthday to both! I love that Francine is having multiple celebrations (and hopefully wearing different fabulous shoes to each!). I’m not surprised your son started displaying indications of your sense of humor so early on – lawn-mower induced birth experiences tend to do that. I’m a pushover for wrinkly-browed dogs and Sherman clearly had the cute genes. Are you sure he wasn’t a special friend? 🙂
What a sweet post, Sis. I love the last pic of the two of them! Love your Mom’s pants – too cute. And last but not least… A CUPCAKE bouquet?? Who needs flowers when you can have cupcakes! Love your Mom’s new painting. Happy bday to both. Have a good weekend.
Yes, aren’t Mom’s pants swell? She picked them up on her latest LA trip. And those CUPCAKES! I know. I saw them sitting on the table and I thought they were real. Now, I wasn’t wearing my glasses, however, I suspect I’d think the same with them on. Am pleased to report the troops had wonderful birthdays. Well, at least the parts I was allowed to hear about …
Happy birthday to all of you! You too…it was a birth day after all.
Love that, Anna. A birth day after all, indeed.
How lovely … Congratulations to everyone 🙂
Hi, Kama. Lovely to hear from you. Thank you for your kind words which I’ll pass on to Mom and H.
What a cool coincidence. I enjoyed glimpsing your life, Kelly. Happy Birthday to them both!
Thank you, Michelle. It has been the happiest of coincidences having them share birthdays. I’ll pass on your kind birthday wishes!
Happiest of birthdays to your son and your mother! My daughter’s birthday is three days before my sister’s, but that’s the closest we get.
I had to look again at the cupcakes – I totally thought they were flowers on first glance!
I know, those cupcakes are amazing, Dana. When I saw the basket sitting on the table I dismissed them as real. Kept wondering where the cake was, as at the dog parties the cake is always on the table. Just TypiKel.
I hope that they had the happiest of Birthdays! I don’t ‘share’ a birthday with any family members, but my Dad’s birthday is 5 days after mine so I guess we share a birthday week! LOVE the cupcakes…beautiful and yummy…I’ll bet!
Birthday weeks are lovely, Debbie. And yes, the cupcakes were even better than they looked. I was lucky and got to bring two home. I shared them with my daughter and she couldn’t believe how lifelike they were, nor how delicious.
Happy birthday to them both! I am in the midst of our few weeks of intense family birthdays, starting with my Dad on Sept 25th, then my sister on Oct. 2nd, and then my mom on Oct. 16th! Hope the celebrations are fun and full of more stories to share!
I love that photo of your son and Mom! She seems very spirited for being almost 94. Showing very well that age is just a number. Hoping I can be that way as well 🙂 Happy birthday to your 2 special people!
Oh, I also hope that I’ll be as sharp at 94, Jen. Thank you for the kind birthday wishes. I’ll pass them onto Mom and my son!
