Faith and begorrah! It’s St. Patrick’s Day!
Wearing Of The Green
Today is pure magic. Anything is possible. Rainbows, leprechauns, pots of gold … even relatives developing a fondness for loafers with shiny buckles and a taste for Guinness!
How will you be celebrating? Making Irish soda bread, quaffing a green pint or six, sporting a shamrock, munching on some homemade Irish scones (Need a recipe? Only took me 25 years but I finally figured out my late husband’s unfinished recipe. Check it out here).
Either way, don’t forget to sport a little green.
But why? Why the importance of wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day? It’s simple really. If you wear green you’re guaranteed to avoid being pinched by leprechauns!
And if you do forget? Hopefully you have the luck of the Irish on your side and are blessed with green eyes.
Always worked for me!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day Everyone!
Enough about me and the wearing of the green. I’m curious about you. Did you remember to don a little green? Yes? What did you wear? Do you believe in leprechauns? How many green beer can you quaff in one go? Got a relative who develops an Irish brogue on the 17th? Scones, soda bread or bratwurst? Don’t give a hoot? Then tell me. What color are your eyes? If you’d care to share, I’d love to hear.

Do hazel eyes that people consistently tell me are green count?? 🙂 We’re laughing at the office today because one of my coworkers who is not even slightly Irish, is decked out in a green T-shirt that is designed to look like a tuxedo shirt with embroidered buttons declaring things like, “I’m Irish” and “I love the Irish,” while another coworker (who is from Ireland) is not wearing even a bit of green. 🙂
Oh you made me grin. And yes – if folks consistently tell you that your hazel eyes are green then that certainly counts.
Happy St. Paddy’s Day, Kelly! My eyes are brown, but I don’t think a year has gone by when I haven’t remembered to don a little green! I’m hoping to find time today to try your recipe for scones (skäns)!
Back at ya! Hope your day was splendid and full of lucky charms. Though perhaps not of the cereal variety.
This morning my 8yo wasn’t wearing any green. So her brother, 11, kindly advised her that she might want to, because mean kids might do the whole pinching thing. Later I suggested she put on some green. Land sakes alive, you would have thought my son and I were the devil incarnate! Little Miss I Hate Mornings started crying about how much she hates St. Patrick’s Day and it’s stupid. Only took her about 30 minutes to calm down and ask for some help getting on something green – you know, just about the time I needed to leave for work. 🙂
Faith and Begorrah!! Isn’t that special? I mean we really do love them but when they act like this it’s just so hard not to have a weensy tantrum ourselves. I hope she ended up having a splendid pinch free day and that you weren’t late for work!
Green eyes! I’m good! And the Kidzilla went to school bedecked in an array of green clothing that would make any leprechaun question his fashion sense. 😀
Yay! You’ve got green eyes too! How marvelous. We must be sisters from another mother. Love that K went to school drenched in green. No pinching for him either.
I did not know that having green eyes counted, so I am very happy to know that I am covered ! Happy St Patrick’s Day to you !
You didn’t? Oh Jane I am sorry I never mentioned it earlier. Hope you weren’t mercilessly pinched by leprechauns as a child when you forgot to wear green! However, knowing you, I’m sure you remembered. Hope your St. Patrick’s Day was splendid!
Must try those scones! Thank you!
P.S. Remembered the day. Forgot the green. My students reminded me . . .
Hi Diane. Thanks for popping in with a comment and for reading! Hope you try the scones – if so, love to hear how they worked out. And I do hope the leprechauns were kind to you yesterday and didn’t administer any pinches…
No green….you’re my reminder that it’s the day to wear it. It slipped right by me. Although, Handyman and I are going out to eat tonight. I do believe I may tip a Guinness or two. 🙂
Happy St.Patty’s day to you!!
May you be blessed with the luck of the Irish all year through.
Oh Kelli I do hope you’re not nursing some nasty bruises from those tricky Leprechauns this morning. Shall I alert you next year? Do hope you and Handyman enjoyed a lovely Guinness or two last night. Thank you for your good wishes and I wish the very same to you!
Not intentional but my bra is green lol. I normally don’t think to do anything different this day. My eyes are blue and I actually just read that only 17% of the world’s population have blue eyes AND green eyes don’t actually exist…they are brown but have flecks in them that reflect and make them appear green. I don’t know if that’s true or not but that’s what I read after all the drama around that silly dress and what color it really was.
My green eyes don’t exist? Well that’s something I didn’t know. Thank you Michele. So interesting. I’ll research it. My mom and my sister also have supposedly green eyes too!
Ah the beauty of built-in green eyes! Not being so blessed, I donned a green top. Corduroy no less as old man winter won’t give up his grip. But I’ve got my eyes peeled for rainbows and leprechauns and any pots of gold that might appear. Wishing you a happy day indeed.
So how’d the rainbows, leprechauns and pots of gold hunting go? Any sightings? Perhaps last night’s magical Northern Lights show was actually the work of leprechauns. I’d like to think so.
Oh how I’d love to see the Northern Lights! No doubt the lucky leprechauns had their hand in unveiling them last night. They’re still hiding their pot of gold though. 🙂
Yes, they are pretty careful with their gold. Not unlike Gringotts Wizarding Bank in Harry Potter run by the goblins…
I have hazel eyes – I think they look brown as often as any color.
I did wear green today:)
Hope you are having a great St. Patricks Day!!
Yay! You wore green and were spared the pinches. I had a splendid St. Patrick’s Day thank you. Hiked the Quarry Rock hike which is though the forest and ends on a rocky outcrop overlooking the ocean. Gorgeous. Also our dog can run alongside off leash which is a huge bonus. Hope you had a wonderful day.
I actually have green eyes – not hazel, but green! I also had auburn hair – so I always felt I belonged in Ireland. Back when we were kids and kids were allowed to play in the neighborhood, everytime it rained – my brother and I would head to the woods behind our house if there was a rainbow. We were actually looking for the pot of gold! Yes – i have on green and I have on my claddagh earrings. But, that is it for me! I might start a book I’ve had on my nightstand for over a year – it’s about ancient Ireland – it is finally calling to me. – on no – it is the pipes that are calling (in Danny Boy) of course. Oh – and I did go see the Chieftains with the symphony a couple of weeks ago – I guess I was preparing!
Oh Vickie that is so cute that your brother and you would slip outside to look for the pot of gold. I love that. Had to google claddagh – thank you for that. Oh so Irish. You really stepped up to the plate yesterday. Did you start the book?
My relatives are from the Orange part of Ireland. Got told that as a kid repeatedly and corrected on the universal green-think ;-). Curiously, St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t seem to be much of an event at my recently transplanted location. It was huge in the city I left – cops were out in force to catch those revelers who had the audacity to try to drive home (there are no routes out of the city without roadblocks on March 17th – sad they continue to catch so many). As for green, I didn’t don any today (nor orange) – guess I forgot. BUT – I did cook corn beef and cabbage early this morning then made reubens to take to work. Does that count?
John, my late husband told me his mother wanted to name him Patrick. His birthday was March 17. His Irish grandfather was furious and said he forbid it. He was all about the Orange as well. And yes, your corn beef and cabbage and the reubens more than count. Top of the morning to you!
Our area had the first of two St. Patrick’s parades over the weekend. I didn’t go, but the newspaper and my Facebook stream was so full of photos there was no way I was going to forget to wear green today.
Two St. Patrick’s Day parades in one weekend? Faith and Begorrah!
If I remember the story right, years ago the group sponsoring the parade splintered into two. Last weekend’s was downtown and more corporate. Yesterday’s was in a traditionally Irish neighborhood, is more about families and clans, and ends up with a big dinner at the local parish hall.
Oh that is really cool Kathy. While I love the idea of both I think the neighborhood one would be fun to participate in. Great community spirit.
I had green beans with my dinner last night…does that count? My mother used to make the best Irish Stew in the entire universe. I’d sneak into the kitchen after dinner and pinch an extra spoonful or three and hope she wouldn’t notice the contents of the pot had dropped a bit 🙂 I still have both her recipe books, I must see if I can find her recipe. Haven’t had it for at least 40 years.
Grinning over the green beans comment. Yes, indeed that counts. Oh how the idea of your mother’s stew has my mouth watering. Yes! Go and look up the recipe. Hope you find it.
Sorry- no green for me today and someone did pinch me! ha!
Hope you’re not sporting a bruise today!
Wore a pale green dress shirt to work, where we had bingo and a bit of popcorn. Drinking’s not my thing, so stayed to home tonight.
Your work sounds fun. I’ll take bingo and popcorn any day! Thanks for popping by and leaving a comment Scott.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day – a little late! I don’t have much green in my closet, but I never forget to wear a little on this holiday. My eyes are blue so that won’t work!
Hey Lana – better late than never. Good on you to remember to sport a little green. Someone told me that green eyes are really hazel. So I’ll have to alert my also green eyed mom and sister. It’s a trick of light to make them appear green apparently. No need to tell the kids though – both are like you – they have blue eyes as well.
I married one! Not a leprechaun : )) – an Irishman. Well, his grandmother was born in County Sligo. He lived there a few years and fell in love with the country. Have you traveled to Ireland, Kelly? I haven’t, but it’s on my list. In fact, just yesterday (March 17th) we made an agreement that we travel there next.
Me? My eyes are hazel!
Phewf, he’s not a leprechaun. Although life would never be dull I somehow suspect. And no, I’ve not yet been to Ireland. It’s high, high on my list. Perhaps we should meet over a Guinness or shamrock cookie in a quaint Dublin pub!
I wore a green tank top under my black shirt; does that count? My eyes are brown, but my husband’s are two different colors! One brown, one blue. Like a husky.
A green tank top? Absolutely that counts. Your husband is so blessed. Well not only is he married to you, but he has two different colored eyes! Wow. The eye color topic reminds me of a friend. Her daughter was short listed for a movie with J Lo. Was turned down as she didn’t have brown eyes and the director deemed her to be too young for colored contacts.
Hi Kelly,
I love that you shared your late husband’s scone recipe. That is so cool. I will have to try it! I am testing out a free ($1) ecourse on how to cook put out by America’s Test Kitchen, so I am working on improving my skills. It’s fun. I just started by I did see that scones were on the list of what we will learn to cook.
Your article was very timely. We had a big discussion on St. Patrick’s Day evening about the whole pinching thing. My husband grew up in a small town and is rather reclusive anyways and he said that no one does that pinching thing. I work in a middle school and it’s ALL ABOUT the pinching thing on St. Patrick’s Day! I woke up that morning, having already picked out my outfit for the day (not green) but then looked at what day it was and opted to change my wardrobe. I often forget to wear green, but it is way more important when you work in a school. Oh, and Monday is pajama day so I definitely can’t forget THAT!
No you can’t forget pajama day! My two loved it when the teachers and staff at their school also dressed up on the special days. Halloween and pajama days were the best. Pancake breakfast day was also very cool. The firemen would come and make pancakes! Not only did the children love it the moms did too. We’d always volunteer for that one!
I don’t really celebrate St. Patrick’s day at all, but do you know, that if you are protestant, your color for Saint Patrick’s Day is actually supposed to be orange and not green. Don’t think anyone out there has orange eyes that they could get away with that! Haha 😉
Hi Melissa. Thanks for popping by and leaving a comment! I did know that – well sort of. My late husband was supposed to be named Patrick but his maternal grandfather (an Orange chap) put the kibosh on that.
I definitely donned some green and did my grandmother duty by making sure that the baby was decked out too. We have to celebrate his 1/4 Irish heritage!
And I absolutely loved your little leprechaun’s shamrock outfit. Adorable Mo. You did him proud.
