It’s true! Butter is good for you!
There’s a certain little spot that I like to pop into for a quick coffee or a sit down lunch. In “Retail Therapy at 91” I mentioned this local delight that is the Butter Cafe. I love Butter. Why? Because not only do they create heavenly baked goods and offer scrumptious creative lunches, they care. The owner Rosie Daykin (a local gal who chose to open right in her neighborhood) and her staff (more like family than employees I surmise) go out of their way to make customers welcome and happy. You feel like you’re having tea at the home of friends. Truly.
I love this place so much that I also follow them on Instagram. As a result I’m treated to daily witty, mouth-watering photos that often make me smile. Imagine my wonderment at spotting this gem a few weeks back.
Butter Is Good For You
Not only were they celebrating their seventh Birthday BUT they were offering a contest. Seven lucky winners would win a big box of Butter goodies. All you had to do was repost the above photo, tag a friend and use the hashtag #butterturns7. What did I have to lose? I entered into the spirit of celebration and happily reposted it.
I never win. Anything. Oh yes, there was that swim meet silent auction where I won the wonderful hair products and a styling brush but that was because lucky LJ touched my tickets. She wins everything. I thought if she touched my tickets before I distributed them in the different paper bags I might actually win something. And I did.
However she wasn’t around to touch my phone when I entered the Butter contest and I really didn’t hold out much hope. In fact, I completely forgot about it.
Guess What? I Won!
Imagine my delight when upon innocently opening Instagram I was shocked to see that my sister had tagged me on the latest Butterbakedgoods photo.
“Congrats to Kelly L McKenzie!” she wrote.
I scrolled up and sure enough there was my name leading off six other lucky winners! And what did we win? Have a gander.
I am blown away by the generosity. Not only did we get a packet of their world-famous marshmallows (they ship these beauts everywhere – bet you’ve had some!) but we got a box of buttery shortbread, a luscious chocolate pistachio loaf, two gigantic puffy marshmallows, two of their signature jumbo stacked cookies with cream in the middle, a cute cotton bag and a tin of their Buttercream Blend tea. Excuse me? Talk about winning the lottery. I am truly overwhelmed.
And yes, attentive readers will note that since the end of summer I’ve been wrestling with the plumpkin look. So, as of today a mere two of the treasures have been gobbled up. I’m keeping mum on which two and whether they were shared, thank you very much. The rest of the booty (with the exception of the tea and the bag) has been gently placed into the freezer (at the bottom where I won’t see them easily) to share at Christmas time with my two when they come back home for vacation. “Share the wealth” as my late father always said.
I do realize that not everyone is able to just pop into Butter for a slice or two of their coconut cake. Not to worry! Head over to your favorite bookstore and pick up a copy of Rosie’s Butter Baked Goods cookbook or simply follow them on Instagram, or Twitter Butter is good for you. Trust me.
Thank you Butter. A very Happy Seventh Birthday to you all!
But enough about me and my assertion that Butter is good for you. I’m curious about you. Are you a lucky leprechaun? Do you win absurd amounts of contests? Or are you more like me and usually win bugger all? If you’d care to share, I’d love to hear.
Me? I’m off to by a lottery ticket.
I’d be ever so happy if you subscribed to my blog and shared this post on your choice of social media. While I don’t earn a dime from Butter for this post I do want to lather on the publicity icing and spread the word about them. Thank you!

OMG, YUM!! And congratulations! 🙂 Love winning, especially when it is something that fantastic! Cannot wait to go check them out. I ADORE marshmallows!! I think I know what is going at the top of my Christmas list!!-Ashley
Best part? Are you sitting down Ashley? Their cookbook Butter Baked Goods contains the recipe for the marshmallows!!! I’d highly recommend it for the top of that Christmas list!
Yum! What a great prize!
Um, I win lots of stuff. Lots. And my son inherited my lucky genes, too. He’s been bringing in the prizes since he was a toddler and won a free photo package. I was worried my daughter was going to be the Bobby Brady of the crowd and never win anything, but then low and behold last spring she finally won not one–but three–things! I have to say, you don’t win unless you enter!
You are just like my mom. She too wins a ton of stuff. I think that’s why I’m SO excited (well in addition to the goodies of course) with this win. I didn’t get the lucky gene you see. Maybe my luck is turning?
You were probably too young when I began to win so many contests that I stopped entering, Kel. I felt something some where was guiding me and utterly spooked. Enough furniture for our whole house, bucket full of cash, two trips to Honolulu, One for a bread ditty I wrote and then mad dash round the neighbourhood to find a loaf for when the judges came. (There were 2 winners out of 8,000,000 who entered all over N. America! It still continues. Cash from 6/49, that book at the Haida dinner, other books, and on it goes. Mind you, I m grateful, just leery. Love, Mom. Oh, Also helped Shirley win their T.V. !!
Yes indeed you are the queen of luck Mom! I truly thought I didn’t have the lucky gene but maybe these means I’m a late developer? Fingers crossed.
I never win anything either – but now I feel more hopeful that I may, one day :)! I love butter too. And Instagram. And delightful bakeries. Oh, and marshmallows :). This happy post made me happy! Thank you, and congrats on your winnings Kelly!
Thank you so much Nicky! I’m glad to spread the joy. I come from a family that wins quite a lot and so this shining moment is special! Let’s both you and I go out a get a lottery ticket!
I never win anything but that doesn’t stop me from trying! I will occasionally buy a lottery ticket when the jackpot is huge and then dream about all the things I will do with my winnings – until the actual numbers are called. Next time maybe I will comfort myself with some of those fresh made marshmallows…
Yes do Mo! The marshmallows are heavenly. I’ve got 2 lottery tickets in my change purse right now that need checking but I’m holding off… so fun to still have the chance of a potential win.
Congratulations Kelly , how exciting !! What a wonderful gift to win, and good on you for your willpower putting the rest in the freezer ! I am like you, and never win a thing. Enjoy the rest when the family comes home at Christmas.
Thanks so much Jane! So fun and it does feel good. Usually it’s the same people who win over and over don’t you find? Maybe our luck is changing. Go out a get a lottery ticket perhaps?
Hooray for winning!!! That stuff looks good – and like you said, butter is good for you!!
Oh Kim check out this link a friend sent me. Love it. http://authoritynutrition.com/7-reasons-why-butter-is-good-for-you/
CONGRATS Kelly!!
What a yummy prize indeed – enjoy every morsel it looks delish!!
Who needs the lottery all that hassle of sharing with friends and family – speaking of which I am available for tea anytime this week!!
Good on ya friend!!
Hahahah! Love this, Janice. So very true – who needs all that hassle. Come on over for tea girl! Or perhaps something stronger? We need a catch up.
now THAT is almost as exciting as winning the lottery! Wow! How cool is that? I love little surprises like that. Yum
Very yummy indeed Beth. No one was more surprised than me I must say.
Congrats! I don’t win much, but I did win a $1000 shopping spree at Macy’s when I was about 20 years old. I remember everything I bought, and I no longer have any of it. I’m due for another win, I think!
What a wonderful prize that is Dana! $1000.00 shopping spree and at Macy’s? Lucky! So fun that you remember everything you bought. I think you are due for another win. Go out and get that lottery ticket!
YUM! I want to come to your house for tea! Maybe it’s time I make a trip to BC… As for butter, my husband has always said that butter is a health food. Now there’s research to back him up. Here’s an article on it. Pay attention to #6, “Butter is associated with a lower risk of obesity.” Woohoo! http://authoritynutrition.com/7-reasons-why-butter-is-good-for-you/
Holy! Thank you so much for attaching that link. I love it. Woohoo indeed! Yes, come on up Harmony. We can take the girls for a walk and then come back here for tea! With butter!
i’m drooling. I watch my sweets but I would have zero self-discipline with Butter. So yay for winning and telling us. Wonder if they mail out of the country! PS fingers crossed on the lottery ticket. PSS I’m joining you and Harmony for tea and butter :))
Happily they mail goodies all over the world. The instagram account often shows crates and crates being readied for shipment. And yes – tea and butter wouldn’t be the same without you! Come on up!
Wow what a tasty prize – lucky you! I don’t recall ever winning anything. I’m on a sugar detox at the moment – you wouldn’t believe the nibbles I’ve turned down this last week… but I think faced with your prize I’d definitely give in to the cravings! I do love butter though – one of my weaknesses.
I take off my hat to you Helen for the sugar detoxing. Well done. It’s quite the rage in my family right now as well. I’m going to give it a more serious shot once we get Thanksgiving out of the way.
Lucky! Looks like I’ll have to add it to list of places to go next time I’m in VanCity 🙂
The only things I ever win are movie tickets. Actually one time I won a travel bag from STA (a student travel site) for naming their new combi (STAn the Van). But that’s about it. No baked goods…yet.
Oh Beth you’d love it. It is your kind of place I just know. When you’re next in VanCity give me a shout and I’ll treat you to a slice of their coconut cake and a coffee/tea. Heavenly. Is a combi a van? If so, brilliant answer!
You are not only a winner…but a winner of delicious baked goods? THAT’S THE BEST KIND OF WINNING!!! YESSSSSS!
I go through spells. I can win nothing for years on end…then I’ll win several things back to back. I’m in a dry spell right now, though!! –Lisa
Oh you sound like Mom, Lisa. She is exactly the same. It got to the point where she got scared because she was winning so much (2 trips, tv’s, furniture etc.) that she stopped entering contests. Her luck halted for a good number of years but she feels the pendulum is slowly coming back in her favour. Hope it swings back in your favour soon too!
Awesome!!!!
I think so too Christine. I come from a family that wins a lot and up until recently I believed I missed out on that gene …
I’m joining Harmony and Susan for tea and butter. After all, you’re just a bit up the coast. 🙂
As for winning things, every now and then I do. Best thing ever I think was a big teddy bear in a raffle at a charity event. He still sits on our bed.
Oh Linda it’s just getting butter and butter! Love to have you join us!
So great that Mr. Teddy has found his forever home on your bed. Reminds me of the huge bear my brother won at the Seattle World’s Fair back in the early 60’s. He gave it to me. I still regret that my mom sold it in a garage sale years later.
I applaud you for deciding on a sharing, Kelly. Of course, there’s another way to look at that loot. They claim you can only gain something like 5 pounds (or is it 10) in a day no matter what you eat ;-). Just saying :-).
Congratulations on the win. My ex-husband was like your mom. He’d enter contests and seemed to win everything from small raffles to a trip for two (I managed to be a winner on that one too) to Aruba. Of course, in his case (clearly not your mom’s), he spent a lot of time focused on getting something for nothing. That’s not something that usually courses through the blood of an entrepreneur. I’d look at how much time he’d spend on chance (in the Aruba case it was a guess on how many of something was in a container – no limits on the number of entries submitted) and discovered I was earning more with equal time. Winning is fun. I’m so glad you are basking in treasures gained from this birthday celebration.
Hahaha! Smiling at the “5 (or is it 10)…” reference. And you raise a good point about the amount of time spent achieving something for nothing. Thanks Nanette!
Nope, can’t say I win either. If there was a banquet of 200 and door prizes for 199, I’d be the one who didn’t get one. Every time. I mean, EVERY time….I stopped caring years ago…it is what it is.
Amazing Patty. I am curious to see if your luck improves over time now that you don’t care. I only seem to win when I blank on the entry into a contest or draw. I seem to gain a bit of a better chance then. My mom, who has huge luck, says she knows the second she enters if she will win or not. A feeling comes over her. I’ve yet to feel an inkling in that department.
Oh yum – what a fabulous win Kelly! And I’m very impressed with the freezer strategy. You can bet I would never be able to show such restraint. But how fun you get to eat your cake later and have it too. 🙂
Have my cake and eat it later! Yes. The eating later bit only works for me when I bury them deep in the freezer. They call out to me at first and if I resist then I forget about them. Wish me luck.
I’ve won stuff off and on, much less lucky with money than other things–if there’s a selection of door prizes, I usually wind up with one I have to pass on to someone as a gift because I can’t use it.
However, I’ve done very well in the Goodreads giveaways (as you might have guessed from my blog.) It helps that I enter a lot of them, and that they are not completely random. People who actually read and review the books they get have a better chance of winning another!
It’s so interesting that you tend to win often in a category or two and not in general. A friend used to clean up just at silent auctions yet my mom will win all across the board. I hadn’t thought before about how “winners” can be categorized. Thanks Scott.
Kelly I am so happy you shared this. My seven year old still doesn’t know how to swim and it is started to get me nervous. He’s taken a number of swim lessons but it just hasn’t clicked. I’m hoping it “just not his time.” Right?
