Hard to believe. The Sochi 2014 Winter Games are about to wrap up.
It was a splendid 16 days in my books. Thank you Sochi. Nice job.
As a Canadian I couldn’t be more proud of both our hockey teams. Solid Gold Olympic moments times two. Amazing. I got up at 04:15 this morning to watch the men play Sweden. I’m so glad I did. They are now running a lengthy wrap up of the highlights of the past sixteen days. Magical.
Before the Closing Ceremonies I’ve just got time to do my final Olympic wrap up piece. As I wrote yesterday in my Olympic Moments post the past week was quite different than planned. My highly anticipated trip to New York with my away at university children was cancelled due to snow. We had to concoct a last-minute plan B.
I’ve already covered the just typikel moments and the bronze and silver Olympic moments. Today we look at the solid gold Olympic moments.
Solid Gold Olympic Moments
An unexpected treat of being stranded in a different city was the fact that it is home to some very special people in my life. My nephew and his girlfriend live there. So does my best friend. The three of them couldn’t have been kinder. We had dinner the first night at my nephew’s apartment. It was such a treat to see him. We don’t see him often enough. It was also wonderful to get to know his girlfriend. She was a wealth of info on the highlights and must sees of her city. My particular favourite was meeting up with her at the crowded coffee bar on Saturday afternoon. Luck was on our side as she managed, for the first time ever, to get a table. Heaven.
Seeing my best friend and her husband was another solid gold moment. Again we lucked out as the Monday was the holiday Family Day. They treated us to a delicious brunch at their home, a visit to the Family Day celebrations in their town and a yummy Mexican dinner topped off by a play. Wow. True solid gold Olympic moments. And so very unexpected.
My personal very best solid gold Olympic moment happened within minutes of seeing that “flight cancelled” alert flash across the airport screen. I knew I had to reach both my children and alert them prior to their imminent departures to New York. My daughter was the first person I called.
“Mom let’s just cancel New York. We can come to you.”
Wow. Thank you. What a novel and perfect solution.
My son’s reaction was also pure gold.
“Mom, it’s not about where we spend the vacation. It’s about being together.”
He was right. It was.
Thanks guys. You are my solid gold Olympic moments. I love you both.

I loved watching the Olympics, and am feeling a little deflated now that they are over. Feel so proud of all of our atheletes, they were amazing !
They were weren’t they? I’m feeling a little deflated too – great word for that. With the snow that’s falling outside right now I’m tempted to slap on the skiis!

Like many the time of the games have come and gone far too fast. Our Canadian athletes were nothing short of amazing!! All should be so very proud of themselves!!
I was saddened to watch the closing though, four years seems so far away.
Off to celebrate another Olympic event here today – snow shoveling!!!

Yes! Ican hear your cheering of Go Neighbours Go! from here! I salute you and award your efforts a solid 6! My efforts on the other hand need a bit of improvement. Finding the full on sweep is effective in clearing the snow from the trees and bushes while a constant push is more effective than short shoves whilst cleaning the sidewalks. My problem lies perhaps not in technique but in frequency! Go Neighbours Go!!!!

What a sweet story. I have loved watching the Olympics even if I’m a southern girl and know nothing about any of these crazy snow sports!
Hahaha! At least you’re honest. These crazy snow sports are so fun! Mind you I say that and I just do cross country skiing but they look like quite a hoot.
Yours are definitely a couple of gold medal children! And I must day that even throughout your “Typikel” adventures, you always maintain your sense of humor and positive spirit. That, my friend, is a great lesson for all of us. I’m so glad that your Plan B vacation turned out so well!
Thanks Mo. There really is no alternative though is there? One has to just suck it up and make lemonade out of those lemons. It was great fun overall and we got to meet up with very special relatives and friends so that was a nice bonus.

Gold medal kids! I loved the skeleton silver medalist who crawled through the crowd to her husband and young children. Noelle Pikus-Pace’s moment was my favorite moment!

Oh Kelly, of course. Expand the idea of solid gold, olympic moments. I did one of those big Meg Ryan sighs when I read that what your son said, “Mom, it’s not about where we spend the vacation. It’s about being together.” Gold.
I watched and enjoyed the Olympics! I watched every once in a while. I don’t have it going nonstop. Disclosure: I’m on team everyone, so I didn’t care who won. I cheered them all. There were a few golden moments. One–the parents of Sarah Burke (who died in a skiing accident this year). Listening to them talk about their daughter. I had a choke sob of love for them, her, and her husband. The winner of the ski marathon waiting to hug the last skier in. Ice dancing-Charlie’s curly hair!!!! Hockey <3
Sarah Burke. Choke moment indeed. All the athletes who were skiing in her memory. Just think of the youngsters she’ll continue to inspire. I’m with you on all the golden moments you mentioned Susan. I’d add Marielle Thompson – gold in ski cross – who is the niece of my friend’s daughter’s piano teacher.(got that?) Also Kelsey Serwa who took silver.Apparently this time last year Serwa was having knee surgery. For the second time. Fast forward a year and she wins silver. Amazing.
Yes to the big Meg Ryan sigh also. That was a solid gold moment and one I”ll never forget.
